Research by Dr David Alexander Lines viewed at different angles create distinctive patterns of activity in the parts of the brain specialized for vision. These rainbow 'pinwheels' represent the patterns created in the brain by viewing a succession of lines. Each colour shows the brain activity for lines of different orientations.
