Imposed upon this is the set of intrisic connections (thin black lines) from hexagon 54 (thick black lines). The patchy connections project to sites of similar orientation selectivity. The global pattern of these patchy connections overlies the visuotopic representation of a line which passes through hexagon 54 and has on orientation equal to the orientation preference of hexagon 54.
